Maytag Man?

Lol, once in awhile I have to put the cars away and do some work around the house. There are certain things I am good at, and certain things I am not good at. Typically home type projects fall into the latter category, and I am usually too stubborn to call someone who knows what the hell they are doing. But I figured, hey a laundrenator can’t be that hard to fix!

About 6 years ago, the switch that tells the laundrenator that the door is closed broke out of it’s mounting points. Without this safety switch, the machine will not run on it’s spin cycle. I ordered the part when it broke, and well, never got around to putting it in as it looked somewhat time consuming. The almighty duct tape held since the inital break….until this week. Ok, go to the basement, try and remember where in the hell the switch was (we have moved many times since, lol). Finally find it and decide to tackle the machine.

Hmmm the switch pulled out to the side….unfortunately, it won’t clear the gap between the shell and the spinny thingy and who knows where the wires run. 10+ years of gunk built up….yuck.

Lid off….double yuck.

Control panel off…..eeeewwwwww. Note: Everything has come apart with very little effort to his point.

With a bit of surprise when trying to pull the unit forward, the entire housing piece came off…..very easily. Huh, this is going great!

All cleaned up and ready to go back on!

New switch installed, and wiring run to the control panel.

And back together. What you don’t see is the giant dent I put in the bottom corner with the hammer because that shell that came off so easy, didn’t want to go back on so easy. The worst part was I never saw how it came apart as the whole thing just kind of popped off when I was pulling on it, so it was double frustrating putting back on. Well, going back on in a confined space wasn’t so easy. By god had I brought out the bigger hammer (his name is thor), we would have needed a new dryer. Eventually I figured it out, but not until after I showed that damn thing who was boss! If nothing else, it is nice and clean now! Ready for another 10 years!

Enjoyed this post, especially the hammer bit, since variety is the spice of life.

Hmmm – you also do work on GE dishwashers?

I have also kept our 22 yr old Maytag washer and dryer going. Not many products work as well. Or are usually easy to fix.
Considered the new front loading machines but decided to keep the old trusty Maytags after reading all the negative reviews. If the eco-future is about putting up with half-washed musty clothes, I’m old fashion. I want clean clothes!

That’s the smell of eco-friendly – musty! I’ve been hanging clothes outside to dry and looking into setting up an inside hanging rack somewhere in the unfinished part of the basement.

I replaced the exact same part a couple of weeks ago, and had pretty much the same experience. PITA!!!
