BMW M5 dreaded vanos problems

Jun 01 2012 wes Editorial 2 Comments

This 2000 M5 is just friggin cool. V8 engine and manual trans.  Comes in with rough idle and CEL showing open circuit bank 2 vanos.

Bank 2 solenoids are behind this cover.

with the cover off we can see the oil leaking into this housing so new “square” o-rings are installed

onto the solenoids after they are pulled

and open circuit found a bit back

That takes care of that, this weekend I’ll install another solenoid in line with the oil accumulator to maintain pressure after shudown.

The black/green wire is obviously broken. Was the Black/yellow wire also broken or just a bit crushed? Might want to address that one too since it shows some signs of damage. Just my $0.02.

That photo didn’t show the damage to that wire well. It was much less subtle in person and that wire was repaired as well. I should have taken some pics after the new lines were soldered in.
