Had a buddy drop off his 996C4S tonight for an oil change in preparation of a trip.  As soon as I started the car, I noticed a rattling coming from the engine.  Immediately IMS jumps into your head, but I didn’t think it could make that much noise and keep running, lol.  The quick diagnosis…..shut the car off and close the driver’s door…….rattle.  So definitely something not related to the motor.  My initial thought was the baffles had come apart …

PSS9 Adjustments

Saturday morning I knocked out an oil change on an 05 Boxster right away after PCA breakfast, and then had a buddy bring by his 996TT that was having some erratic suspension behavior when it would hit bumps.  The kit had been adjusted previously to try and stop this behavior before it came to me, but they were definitely adjusted incorrectly.  The rear settings were at full soft or the “9” position (pss10’s are opposite).  This was causing the car …

Time to get rid of the living room furniture and put it to use, lol.  Finally go the mounting hardware kit for the rollbar and did the install today. Since it was a nice day…..it was a driveway install 🙂 Pulling the old seats out. Old seatbelt bolt out.  Since this GT3 had seats and a rollbar in it previously, I was pretty sure at least one of the bolts would be knicked up a little from install and deinstall. …

Got a little further on the Donkey tonight.  Got the front end torn down, waterpump replaced, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor replaced.  Unfortunately I ordered the wrong tensioner arm for the timing belt, so I will have to wait for that.  We are also waiting for the fuel line kit to come in as well.  When the 928 came out, it had the longest timing belt of any production vehicle.  Not sure if it still holds the record, but …

One problem that is popping up in the 996/986 owners is the display unit on the climate controls going bad.  Sometimes parts of the numbers do not illuminate/burn out, or you get a half moon or bleeding of the  LCD screen.  The solution use to be replace the control unit which ran about $350 plus install.  There is now a cheaper solution of just replacing the LCD screen.  This boxster had an issue with part of the numbers (temperature) not …

Replaced a turn signal switch assembly today on a friend’s 964 today.  The turn signals stop canceling after making a turn, so something internal had broken in the switch assembly.  Luckily I got it done before the sun melted the surface of the earth today.  Since the garage was full, I had to quickly use the rapidly disappearing shade, lol. Disconnect the battery….. Annnnnd jump ahead to the dash in pieces.  Unfortunately the lower dash unit needs to come off …

A buddy sent his wife’s 928 over from some maintenance.  We are going to go through the front of the motor, the cooling system, and the fuel system.  The car already has a beautiful paint job from Travis at TC Concepts in Topeka.  We will get the mechanical stuff knocked out, then the interior. First thing to do was to pull the injectors so we could send them out to witchhunter for a cleaning.  I immediately noticed all the electrical …

Had a friend bring in his Boxster yesterday because he was having a starting issue.  After some basic tests, I felt the first step of action was to replace the battery.  We did that, but it didn’t solve the problem….but…..it triggered a few more symptoms which pointed to a bad alternator.  Before we did the battery, the battery light was not coming on which usually triggered when the alternator goes south.  After we did the battery, the battery light came …

Got a call Sunday afternoon about a Boxster that had overheated and needed to get back on the road.  We had the car towed in and I started tearing into it.  This was a car with about 80k miles on it, which had not had it’s major services done……ever from what I can tell.   Unfortunately, a $40 drive belt caused about $1,100 in damage.  Basically what happened, is the drive belt broke, and the owner kept driving the car even …

Finished up the RMS and Diff bearings a few nights ago.  Still need to knock out a wheel bearing on the right side and it should be ready to go.  I think the output shaft having play caused additional stress on the cv axle and bearing on that side as well due to the slight wobble the shaft must have had. New bearings installed, diff in place, and gearbox assembled. Outer diff cover installed. Selector shaft installed. Ahhh much better, …
