87 951 Maintenance

Had a buddy bring by his 87 951 to see if we could track down some quirks. He picked the car up off ebay, and now we have to go through a few little things to get it up to par. The car sports a turbonetics turbo, B&B headers, custom intercooler piping, manual boost controller, etc. Who knows what we actually have here, but it definitely needs some cleaning up. I took some time to reroute a bunch of vacuum …

Finally had a few minutes this week to do a last minute repair on my front splitter for next weekend’s DE. I arrived at a gator about 12 inches too early at MAM a few weeks ago, dropped the front right wheel into a pothole, and the splitter caught the edge of the gator, breaking a piece off. The problem, is that the splitter is made of unobtanium, so I decided to do a quick repair to get me through …

Odds and Ends

Been busier than could be over the last week or so and haven’t had time to update the blog.  Work work work. Had a low mileage 944 come through for a round of belts and rollers, ignition relay, defrost wire repair, and just small odds and ends here and there.  The car had not been run in 5 years, but the belts had been done 500 miles ago.  The previous shop had not replaced any of the rollers when they …

So you have damaged the threads in something really important and you need to fix it.  What do you do?  Probably the number one answer you will get is to install a helicoil.  A helicoil is a spring like insert which you install in the hole which provides for new threads that the bolt can catch when installed.  In my honest opinion, the fix will last about as much as the helicoil costs….not long.  Helicoils are notorious for pulling out …

Started tearing into a 951 today with no real good previous records of maintenance, so a round of timing belt/waterpump was due. The shop supervisor sets up shop.  Oddly enough, management always is in the way when you are trying to get something done. The really cool part about this car……rare sunroof delete 🙂 The surgery. Waterpump replaced.  This car will get all new rollers, pump, and belts.  I can’t quite put my finger on the history of this car.  …

Finished up the RMS and Diff bearings a few nights ago.  Still need to knock out a wheel bearing on the right side and it should be ready to go.  I think the output shaft having play caused additional stress on the cv axle and bearing on that side as well due to the slight wobble the shaft must have had. New bearings installed, diff in place, and gearbox assembled. Outer diff cover installed. Selector shaft installed. Ahhh much better, …

Needed to take care of a couple of nagging issues on the Dragon before she finds a new home, and I had a couple spare hours this morning, so I decided to tear it apart spur of the moment.  One was a tiny weep from the rear main seal that has been bugging me for a few months.  On occasion you will get a bad RMS from the supplier and it will leak, which is the case here.  It wasn’t …

Audi DE Inspection

Finished an inspection on a 951 last week getting ready to do the upcoming Audi DE event at Heartland park.  A quick brake bleed, inspection, and replacement of a few missing door check bolts, and it was ready to rock!

Just in the knick of time for the Club Race/DE.  Had Charlie and Jerry at KCRaceware weld in the cage for me.  I kept putting it off thinking I’d get around to doing it, but I have been so busy the last couple of months, I decided to let the pro’s do the install.  Jerry can really lay down some nice welds.  He did a hell of a job on the install 🙂 We started with a Safety Devices Bolt …
