Got the new parts in for the little white Boxster today so I went about installing the new cables and transmissions. The updated kit. The early Boxsters used weak transmissions for the top mechanism, which Porsche later updated to beefier units. The old units are no longer available, so updating is the way to go rather than buying a used unit that will fail eventually. Old transmission to come out. New transmission installed. Then there is a lot of measuring …

Boxster Repair

Had this Boxster come in this afternoon for a mechanical top failure. Pretty common in the early boxsters, as the transmission and/or cables will fail, causing the top to not raise correctly or evenly. If you force it, you can cause serious damage to the mounting points of the top. It also had a check engine light and the low washer fluid light was on even though it was full. Curses….mice! To the right of the white tag you can …

Had this little Boxster come in the other day to finish it’s 60k service which required changing the spark plugs and the accessory drive belt. Pretty straight forward repair. Opening the front up to get to the belt. Oil change with the obligatory magnetic drain plug installed. This will help us monitor the intermediate shaft bearing for debris. Pretty common issue with the 996/986/997/987 are the coilpack connector clip becoming brittle and breaking off. This one had a broken clip …

This is one I haven’t seen before actually. Customer came through with the complaint that the outer door handle wouldn’t open the door and felt crunchy. Typically we see the window drop issues or lack there of, but never a jammed door handle. I was eager to figure this one out. Once I got into the interior of the door, I immediately saw the issue. There is a retaining pin that attaches the door handle to an intermediate arm that …

Had this Boxster limped over to the house the other day for a shifting linkage issue. The shifter was floppy and hard to get in gear. Typically when the newer Porsches loose shifting, it is due to the cup linkage at the bottom of the shift lever. The symptoms of that though are usually a freely moving gear shift lever and you are either stuck in neutral or in the gear the bushing broke in. Once I got my hands …

Knocked out the 105k service on this boxster earlier this week. Filters, oil change, inspection, brake flush, the usual. On the inspection, I found a torn CV boot on the driver side, so we decided to pull all the axles and replace all 4 boots and re-grease the joints. It is a pretty big job on a boxster since the subframe shield and exhaust need to come apart in order to drop the axles out. Since the car has a …

Had this nice little 99 986 come in today for front brake pads. I noticed when I pulled it in that it also had a CEL and airbag light on, so those would need to be checked. A slew of codes wasn’t what I was expecting, but I cleaned some sensors and we will monitor it for a few weeks to see if anything changes. A day of blurry pics. Old stuff comes off. And new pads, rotors, and sensors …

Who can do this?

Karl is actually working on the engine of this Boxster.  I could hear him but didn’t see him… Still nothing.. Really?  inside a Boxster engine bay? I couldn’t do that if the engine was missing!

Boxster Injectors

Had a Boxster come through that was throwing some engine codes and running rough. Read down the codes and had a couple of possibilities for causes, so we started looking around. Fueling issue was the first thing to check, so I got the stethoscope out and listened to each injector. 5 had a distinct fast “tick tick tick” sound like normal, but the #3 cylinder had a “thunk….thunk……thunk” sound to it, which told me we probably have an over fueling …

Pretty standard repair around these parts. A little white smoke out the exhaust, some odd running issues due to a vacuum leak. Meh, not the end of the world. Side of the engine gives you access to part of the OAS. And the top is the other part. And out of the car……..and because we can, we cut it open to inspect the innards. Which has a nice tear in it. Back together with a new OAS and we should …
