Axle Week

When it rains it pours. One of my favorite “clean” jobs are replacing axle joints or boots. There is nothing better than getting absolutely covered in grease, and take everything you touch with you, lol. A freind of mine noticed he had a couple of torn axle boots on the rear of his 993 that needed attention.  It is very important to replace these boots if you notice them ripped at all, as they no only help to keep the …

Bling bling yo yo

Lol, had a freind drop his 993 off the other night to replace a noisy alternator bearing…..or belt sensor roller……or fan bearing…..oh hell just replace it all! I endured the scorching heat to pull the fan and housing out of the car so he could spruce up the color a little bit. Tim’s process is the use a high temp duplicolor paint. Multiple coats of paint, then you need to heat it up to cure the paint. So Tim uses …

Brought in a buddy’s 993 tonight to fix a rear wheel bearing that was making some noise. Brake caliper and rotor off.  Axle nut removed.  Getting the axle out is the tricky part as the inboard end hits both the subframe and the transaxle….. Outer hub off, and the outer section of bearing in pieces. Hard to tell by the blurry picture, but the outer race is pretty chewed up. Old bearing completely removed. Pressing the new bearing in place.  …

One of the major issues of the 993 is clogged secondary air injection ports in the cylinder head which causes a dreaded CEL light.  The thing is, the SAI system is only active on start up, and really is only an emissions thing to prevent excess hydrocarbons on initial startup.  The nice thing, is that the 95’s are OBDI and do not have a CEL light to trigger.  So most likely the majority of 95’s are running around with clogged …

Last time the car was in we noticed some cracked spark plug wires, and really had no history of a full 60k service, so we decided to take the plunge and get it done.  Picked up a set of wires for a song, and we will reuse the old boots since they are in nice shape. First up was to install a front bumper bar to prevent some curbing. Right side muffler off, going after the spark plugs. Top side …

Had a buddy bring in his 993 today for an install of an Atiwe steering wheel.  The install took some trial and error since what little instructions came with the wheel weren’t for our model car, and they were in German, lol.  Eventually we got it figured out though: Using a t-30 torx, remove the 2 screws on the back of the wheel holding the airbag on (disconnect the battery for 20 minutes before removing airbag, yada yada). Unplug the …

Speed yellow 993TT in for spark plugs, belts, and a few other misc jobs. First thing to do was the drop the bellpans and change the diff fluids. A gallon of Mobil 1 (and then some) Going after the spark plugs.  On the TT, this is a real pain in the butt, lol.  4 are easy, 1 is a semi PITA, and the infamous #6 plug lies under the power steering pump, which makes access nearly impossible.  To get this …

993 Repairs

Had a 993 in the garage the other day for a few repairs.  First off I repaired the fan duct housing to the heater assembly, and then I went after a metal rattle in the rear of the car. New heater duct installed. Old air duct.  As you can see, the air wasn’t getting where it needed to go, lol There were multiple causes of the metal rattle in the rear.  The car had been in a rear end accident …

993 Suspensions

A quick round up of different suspension options on the 993: Stock configuration: Lowered with Bilstein HD’s and H&R lowering springs: Lowered with PSS9’s.  Height is infinitely adjustable…. Porsche ROW suspension on the left, PSS9’s on the right…..

Just got done installing new shocks/struts/lowering springs on a freind’s 1995 993.  One of the major downfalls of the 993, was Porsche’s decision to use a cheap Monroe shock assembly in the suspension.  After 20-30k miles, they are usually completely shot….i don’t recall the last time I saw a 993 with a set of good stock shocks still on it. There are a couple of options you can look at for replacement. 1.  Bilstein PSS9/10 coilover suspension.  You can go …
