951 Radiator

Dave dropped off his 951S to have me go through the cooling system. The car was starting to get fairly hot in stop and go traffic in our lovely 100 degree heat, so it was time to do some preventative maintenance on the front end. We decided it was best to replace the 25 year old radiator and any associated hoses to get the car cooling as optimally as possible. The car was hitting the top white line of the …

944T Part 4:

Took some time this weekend to get the head cleaned up and ready for the machine shop. My initial thought was to put in valve seals and slap it back on, but after seeing some very slight coolant erosion in the face, I decided it was best to have the head resurfaced to clean up anything that my cause an issue. Dropped it off this morning, so hopefully will have that back in a few days. Head off the car. …

Got the car buttoned up yesterday and thought we were going to be good to go. The problem with these really really low mile cars is that once you start driving them, stuff starts failing faster than you can fix it. On the initial warm up, I kept getting a puff of smoke off the passenger side of the engine. When it didn’t stop after a few minutes, I looked underneath and found the head gasket was leaking externally onto …

I got the 951 up in the air today and started poking around a little more. Always exciting to see what you will run into next. My plan was to retension the belts to the correct spec, then start on the headers. Ummmm not so much. ROFL. Some people shouldn’t work on cars they aren’t familiar with, lol. We all have our moments, but this is AWESOME! Some things put a big smile on my face. Needless to say, this …

Something you don’t see every day anymore. A 1 owner, 12k mile 1986 944 turbo. She started having fits after sitting for a number of years, so time to go through it and see what we can figure out. Another shop went through the timing belt and such, and now we have a no start. I know, I was thinking the same thing, but looks like the T-belt is ok 😉 She’s a beut Clark…..The tow truck driver dumped it …

Seriously……3 changes of clothes today and 3 showers, lol. Should make 4 by the time I shut down for the night, lol! Nature of the beast. A half hour at the cleaners and the transaxle was at least clean enough to handle. Starting to get into the bellhousing. Lots of fun bolts to get to….they were tight like a tiger. Bellhousing off with the clutch assembly exposed. And with the pressure plate removed, it was like christmas, you think you …

Coooool Breeze

No, this post isn’t about a highly trained special forces member from the Unit, but rather an A/C day. Finally got the drier and seals I needed to charge up the 951’s a/c. Before I got to that though, I knocked out the timing and balance shaft belt since they were 8+ years old. Camera battery died as I was starting the job, so we have some missing pictures….this is the going back together stage, lol There, now that we …

Since summer is headed our way in Kansas, it is awfully nice to have a good working A/C system. Unfortunately, this car’s system stopped functioning last fall, so it was time to get it repaired before the season gets too hot. While I had the car, the owner wanted me to slap the a new rear M030 968 sway bar on to improve the handling. He had already installed the front, but hadn’t gotten to the rear yet, so I …

Clifford’s new owner came by to have an exhaust leak fixed that has been nagging the car for awhile now. It was obvious there was leakage around 3 of the exhaust ports, but we weren’t really sure why. The previous owner had done a recent head gasket, so I suspected a possible stud issue. He brought me new headers to install along with a new set of gaskets. The oem headers after 25 years are prone to cracking and leaking. …

On To The 951

After I put the pressure tester on the coolant system I was able to locate our coolant leak. Pretty common for the front port on the waterpump to start leaking from the oring. When I glanced down there, I knew I was in for a treat, lol. First, up on the lift and ready to go: First thing I noticed was the passenger side sway bar bushing was blown apart. Pretty common area for oil leaks to drip off of, …
