Had this Boxster come in awhile back for some catch up service. With 100k miles on the clock, it was time for some much needed service. Really the car just needed a round of filters and spark plugs, but I did notice the spark plug tube seals were leaking on the engine, so while I was in there, I made sure to replace those. After pulling out the tubes, I noticed the seals had been replaced at some point. Factory …

Has this Boxster in for routine service the other day, in addition to addressing a loud whine that was coming from the engine. Usually engine whines are due to bad accessories or idle rollers/tensioners. First thing to do was to remove the belt and give everything a spin. Quickly found a bad alternator idler bearing which not only had crunchy bearings, but also had a lot of play in it. A new roller, and we were back in business. Then …

Had this Boxster literally limp into the shop the other day for some badly overdue maintenance. With 70k miles on the clock, it had never had spark plugs done, or a fuel filter, or any part of the 60k service from what I can tell. As badly as it was running, it was not throwing a CEL, but there were a couple of odd MAF codes in the system that we don’t see very often. The car was backfiring through …

Took some time today to tear down this M96 motor to show you the internals of the 996/Boxster Engine: On the stand ready for dis assembly. First thing we do is pop the cam plugs out of the end of the cam housings so we can see the orientation of the camshafts. Starting with bank 1, the intake camshaft notch should be pointed outward when the crank is at TDC. If it is not, rotation 360 degrees and it should …

Had this Boxster come in this week with an odd problem, the electronic rear trunk release was not working. We could hear the motor operating, but the trunk wouldn’t pop, so I assumed we had a broken cable from the motor actuator. Normally, you can jack the car up, remove the driver side fender liner and pull the emergency release cable. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I pulled with the little access, I couldn’t get it to release. So off …

Awhile back we installed the Borla exhaust on this Boxster. At the same time the customer ordered some headers, but they were incorrect when they came in. So, vacation came around and we got the car for 10 days 🙂 The header install on the 2000 and later boxsters is a little tricky with the aftermarket headers that don’t have cats on them. The later Boxster has catalytic converters on both the headers (primaries), and then on the rear exhaust …

Had this Boxster come in last week for a weird instrument cluster issue and to install/activate the cluster’s on board computer, allowing the driver to see miles to empty, average mpg, temperature, and speed limit. While all cars had this function in the DME, some did not come with the control stalk or with it activated, so while it was there, you couldn’t see it or use it. So we took care of that 🙂 The cluster had quit working …

Gosh, I have got so many pictures of projects to blog about and no time 🙁 Hopefully I can get caught up soon. The last month or so we have been slammed with a few races and a lot of maintenance projects. A few long term projects are heading out the door to make way for future winter projects that take a little time. Have a cool 928GTS coming in next week for some big mods, so be ready for …

Hey buddy, are you honking at me????? Fairly common issue here. You are driving down the road and hit a little bump, and the horn honks on it’s own. Once in awhile, you can deal with it. I mean, the chick in the sports car next to you at the red light thinks you are honking at her, you make her day, she smiles and drives off. You think, “I am the man.” At the next light, the horn honks …

After we got the motor transplant done in this Boxster, the owner later mentioned his wheel bearing was making noise in the rear as well. DOH! We were just in there and had everything apart, but that’s how it goes sometimes 🙂 Take care of the big things first. So yesterday I took that side down and pulled out the bad bearing. Typically with the new sealed wheel bearings, they will exhibit a growling noise rather than having play in …
